How I Work With Kids During Photo Sessions

When it comes to photographing kids, I don’t expect them to sit perfectly still the entire time. Kids are meant to move, explore, and have fun, and I build my photography sessions around that. As a Wichita photographer, I’ve learned that the best photos come when kids feel comfortable and happy, not pressured to behave a certain way.
I like to give kids something fun to do during their session. Sometimes that means letting them move around, play, or interact with their family instead of forcing stiff poses. Other times it means simple activities that keep them engaged and feeling included. When kids are having fun, they relax, and that playful energy shows up beautifully in their photos.
What I’ve noticed is that once kids get that energy out and feel like the session is enjoyable, they’re much more willing to slow down when it’s time for a more serious photo. Because they’re already in a good mood, they listen better and have fun
. It becomes a balance of playful moments and calm moments instead of a constant struggle to get them to sit still.
My goal with kids photography is to make sessions feel easy for everyone involved. I want kids to leave feeling happy and parents to feel relieved instead of stressed. When kids enjoy the experience, it shows in their expressions, and those are the photos families end up loving the most. 💗
